Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu therefore gives a definition of guru. Yāre dekha, tāre kaha 'kṛṣṇa'-upadeśa: (CC Madhya 7.128) the bona fide guru is he who advises his disciples exactly in accordance with the principles spoken by Kṛṣṇa.

When one starts Bhakti by hearing & chanting Bhakti Lata bij starts to grow as hearing & chanting works as a watering process for the seed of Bhakti.
But along with Bhakti Lata starts growing weeds when one is not doing Seva along with hearing & chanting. Theses weeds are :-
nisidh aacharan - not following four regulative principles
Kutti nati - deceitful/duplicit behaviour
Jiv Himsa
Labh -material enjoyment
Pooja -wish to be worshiped by others
Pratishta -wanting fame
So if weeds are growing then naturally growth of Bhakti Lata becomes stagnant.
So one has to get rid of this weeds to process in Bhakti.
Once again Srila Prabhupada comes to our rescue & given us the SECRET of advancement in spiritual journey.
Srila Prabhupada described in the purport of Bhagvad Gita 4.34:
tad viddhi praṇipātena
paripraśnena sevayā
upadekṣyanti te jñānaṁ
jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ
Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth.
In the purport of this verse Srila Prabhupada has mentioned that satisfaction of self realized spiritual master is the secrete of advancement in spiritual life.
So all we have to do is satisfy our Guru Maharaj with our Seva in humble attitude.
Submission & inquiries constitutes proper combination for spiritual understanding.
So even if we are not perfect in our Seva,Sadhana & Sadhu Sanga by serving & satisfying self realized spiritual master we can advance in Bhakti & can attain perfection by mercy of Our Guru Maharaj.
